111 – Ibn ʿAdī, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Jurjānī*
He is the Imām, ḥāfiẓ, critic, and indefatigable traveler, Abū Aḥmad ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Mubārak b. al-Qaṭṭān al-Jurjānī, the author of al-Kāmil on impugnment and validation—a monumental work that fills five large volumes.
He was born in 277 AH; his first audition was in 290, and he set out on his journeys in 297.
Among those from whom he received ḥadith were Buhlūl b. Isḥāq al-Tanūkhī, Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Suwayd, Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Marwazī, Anas b. al-Salm, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim b. al-Rawwās—the two Damascenes—Abū Khulayfa al-Jumaḥī, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nasāʾī, ʿImrān b. Mūsā b. Mujāshiʿ, al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad al-Madīnī, al-Ḥasan b. al-Faraj al-Ghazzī—both disciples of Yaḥyā b. Bukayr—Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Firyābī, Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī, al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān al-Nasawī, ʿAbdān al-Ahwāzī, Abū Bakr b. Khuzaymah, al-Baghawī, Abū ʿArūbah, and a great many others in the Two Sanctuaries, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Khurāsān, and the mountain regions. He lived long, granting him exceptionally high chains of transmission.
He pronounced narrators weak or reliable, authenticated reports, identified hidden defects, and attained pre-eminence in this craft—though a grammatical flaw appears in his writing (1).
Among those who transmitted from him were his own teacher Abū al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUqda and Abū Saʿd al-Mālīnī,
