over you.” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me with the assurance that I will not die until I am commanded, and that thereafter this will be crimsoned with the blood of this”—he indicated his beard and then his head. He was indeed slain, and Abū Faḍālah fell alongside ʿAlī on the day of Ṣiffīn.
Al-Ḥasan reported—on the authority of Abū Bakrah—that he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing on the pulpit with al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī at his side, and he declared, “This son of mine is a leader; perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factions of the Muslims.” Al-Bukhārī recorded the ḥadīth without the words “two great.”
Thawr ibn Yazīd narrated—from Khālid ibn Maʿdān—from ʿUmayr ibn al-Aswad—who related that he visited ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit while he was staying in a small building on the coastal frontier of Ḥimṣ, and his wife Umm Ḥarām was with him. Umm Ḥarām told us that she had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The first army from my nation to launch a sea-borne expedition has earned it”—meaning the guarantee of Paradise. Umm Ḥarām asked, “Messenger of Allah, will I be with them?” He replied, “You will be with them.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, “The first army from my nation to attack the city of Caesar will be granted forgiveness.” Umm Ḥarām asked, “Shall I be among them, Messenger of Allah?” He said, “No.” Al-Bukhārī narrated this report, which contains his ﷺ prophecy that his nation would mount naval expeditions and would assault the city of Caesar.
Shuʿbah narrated—from Simāk—from Jābir ibn Samurah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Ahead of the Hour there will arise thirty impostors—each a great liar—every one of them claiming to be a prophet.” Muslim recorded it, and both he and al-Bukhārī transmitted its wording from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah.
Al-Aswad ibn Shaybān narrated—from Abū Nawfal ibn Abī ʿAqrab—from Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr—that she said to al-Ḥajjāj: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us that….”
