58 – ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar al-Jushamī narrated to us; he said: Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, Abū Sumayr—who was known for his devotion—narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Salmān al-Fārisī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever provides a fasting person in Ramadan with something to break his fast that was earned lawfully, the angels pray for him every night of Ramadan, and Gabriel will shake his hand on the Night of Decree. Anyone whose hand Gabriel shakes will find his heart softened and his eyes flowing with tears.”
A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what if he cannot afford that?” He replied, “With merely a handful of food.” The man asked, “What if he cannot afford even that?” He said, “Half a loaf of bread.” The man asked again, “What if he cannot afford even that?” He said, “A sip of milk.” The man persisted, “And if he cannot afford even that?” He replied, “Then a drink of water.”
