54 – Shujaʿ narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us; Zakariyyah ibn Abī Maryam al-Khuzaʿī informed us; he said: I heard Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), say:
“You have introduced the night prayer of Ramadan even though it was not made obligatory for you; only fasting was prescribed for you. Therefore, if you choose to stand in prayer, keep it up and do not abandon it. A group from the Children of Israel innovated a practice that Allah had not ordained for them, seeking by it the good pleasure of Allah, but when they failed to observe it properly, Allah punished them for neglecting it. Concerning them He said: ‘But monasticism—they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them’ (al-Hadid 57:27) to the end of the verse.”
