31 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Hilal al-Wazzan; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUkyim narrated to us; he said:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say when the month of Ramadan began:
“Be aware that Allah has prescribed its fasting for you, but He has not prescribed its night prayer. Whoever among you stands in prayer, it is one of the supererogatory acts of goodness that Allah has mentioned; whoever does not, let him sleep upon his bed. Let none of you say, ‘I will fast if so-and-so fasts, and I will stand if so-and-so stands.’ Whoever fasts or stands, let him do so for Allah alone.
Then he raised his hand and said: Beware! Let no one among you pre-empt the month. Beware! Do not begin the fast until you see it, and then fast once you have seen it. If it is concealed from you, complete the count as thirty. Reduce idle talk in the mosques of Allah, and let each of you know that he is in prayer as long as he is waiting for the prayer. And beware! Do not break your fast until you see the night settling over the hilltops.”
