Al-Risālah al-ʿArshiyyahIbn Taimiya

“Exalted in rank, Lord of the Throne, He sends revelation by His command to whomever He wills of His servants, to warn of the Day of Meeting. They will stand exposed; nothing about them will be hidden from Allah. To whom belongs sovereignty today? To Allah, the One, the All-Subduing.” [Ghāfir: 15, 16]

And He, Most High, says:

“And He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Loving, Lord of the Throne, the All-Glorious, who does whatever He wills.” [al-Burūj: 14–16]

The word “Glorious” has been recited in the nominative, as an attribute of Allah, and in the genitive, as an attribute of the Throne.

And He, Most High, says:

“Say: Who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the mighty Throne? They will say: They belong to Allah. Say: Will you not then fear Him?” [al-Mu’minūn: 86, 87]

Thus, He describes the Throne as glorious and mighty. And He, Most High, says:

“Exalted is Allah, the True King! There is no god but Him, Lord of the noble Throne.” [al-Mu’minūn: 116]

Thus, He also describes it as noble.

Likewise, it is reported in the two Sahīhs, on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, that in times of distress the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would say:

“There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the noble Throne.”

Thus, in this hadith he also describes it as mighty and noble.

The disputant asserts that the highest celestial sphere stands in the same relation to what lies beneath it as any other sphere does to what lies beneath it. If the Throne belonged to the same kind as the celestial spheres, its relation to what lies beneath it would likewise be the same as that of any other sphere to what lies beneath it. This would not warrant placing it outside that kind and singling it out for mention, just as it does not warrant singling out one heaven rather than another—even though, according to these people, the higher heaven stands in relation to the lower as one celestial sphere does to another. It would differ from what lies beneath it only in being larger, just as the higher heaven differs from the lower. Indeed, the relation of heaven to air, and of air to water and earth, is like that of one celestial sphere to another. Yet He has not singled out any one of these kinds over the one immediately below it
