It is established in the authentic hadith collections and elsewhere that ‘Alī, may Allah be pleased with him, stated that they possessed no secret from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that was unknown to others, nor any written document apart from what was contained in the scroll. It concerned blood money, the ransoming of captives, and the rule that a Muslim must not be killed in retaliation for a disbeliever.
Furthermore, it is well known that someone whom Allah has appointed to guide and convey His message in clear Arabic, if he never speaks except in terms contrary to the actual, hidden truth, is closer to misguidance and deception than to guidance and clear explanation. A detailed refutation of their position belongs elsewhere.
The point is that everything transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on this subject and others is true, each part confirming the others. It accords with the natural disposition of created beings and the sound reason and upright intentions instilled in them. It contradicts neither sound reason, nor upright intention, nor an uncorrupted natural disposition, nor authentic reports reliably transmitted from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
Only someone who accepts a false report, understands it to mean something it does not indicate, or holds a belief he imagines to be rational knowledge when it is ignorance, or an unveiling when it is an obscuration, supposes these to contradict one another—if what he holds conflicts with an authentic transmitted report. Otherwise, he sets sound reason or genuine unveiling against something he supposes to have been transmitted from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, although it is falsely attributed to him, or against wording he supposes to indicate something it does not indicate.
An example is their discussion of the saying attributed to him, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“The Black Stone is Allah’s right hand on earth. Whoever shakes hands with it and kisses it is as though he had shaken hands with Allah and kissed
