Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

of the Prophet’s practice was this. (1)

Yet at times he would recite one of the shorter surahs in Fajr and one of the longer ones in Maghrib. On one occasion, he led the Fajr prayer reciting Surah al-Zalzalah, reciting it in both rak'ahs; (2) and on another occasion, he recited Surah al-A'raf in Maghrib, (3) Surah al-Tur, (4) and Surah al-Mursalat. (5) All of these are among the longest surahs. This shows that the imam should generally follow what the author has mentioned, though there is nothing wrong with occasionally lengthening the Maghrib prayer and shortening the Fajr prayer.

His statement, “and in the remaining prayers, from its intermediate surahs”: the evidence for this is that the Prophet instructed Mu'adh ibn Jabal to recite in the Isha prayer: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,” “By the night as it enshrouds,” and “By the sun and its morning brightness.” (6)

(1) This is based on the previously cited hadith of Abu Hurayrah: “He would recite the medium-length surahs of al-Mufassal in Isha.” This concerns Isha. As for Zuhr and Asr, Muslim narrated in The Book of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in Fajr, no. 459, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: “The Prophet would recite in Zuhr: ‘By the night when it covers,’ and recite something similar in Asr.” (2) Narrated by Abu Dawud, The Book of Prayer, chapter: A Man Repeats One Surah in Both Rakahs, no. 816; and al-Bayhaqi, 2:390. (3) Narrated by al-Bukhari, The Book of Adhan, chapter: Recitation in Maghrib, no. 764; and Abu Dawud, The Book of Prayer, chapter: The Extent of Recitation in Maghrib, no. 812. “What were the two longest surahs?” He replied: “Al-Araf.” (4) Narrated by al-Bukhari, The Book of Adhan, chapter: Reciting Aloud in Maghrib, no. 765; and Muslim, The Book of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in Fajr, no. 463 (174). (5) Narrated by al-Bukhari, The Book of Adhan, chapter: Recitation in Maghrib, no. 763; and Muslim, The Book of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in Fajr, no. 462 (173). (6) Narrated by al-Bukhari, The Book of Adhan, chapter: One Who Complains about His Imam When He Lengthens the Prayer, no. 705; and Muslim, The Book of Prayer, chapter: Recitation in Isha, no. 465 (178).
