the other is that he prostrates with his face between his palms. However, the author mentioned this only in passing, because this is not the place to discuss the positioning of the hands during prostration.

The imam makes those behind him hear …

His statement, “The imam makes those behind him hear,” means: according to what the situation requires. If there is only one person behind him, a quiet voice is sufficient; but if there is a congregation behind him, he must raise his voice. If those behind him cannot hear his voice, he may appoint someone to relay it, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did when he came while Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, was leading the people in prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was ill and unable to make the worshippers hear his voice, so Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, prayed at his right and relayed the takbir of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to the people. Whenever the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, pronounced the takbir in a low voice, Abu Bakr pronounced it aloud, and the people heard it. (1) This is the basis for relaying the imam’s takbir. If there is no need for a relay, because the imam’s voice reaches the people directly or through amplification, then it is not Sunnah for anyone to relay the imam’s takbir, by the agreement of the Muslims.

The author’s statement, “The imam makes those behind him hear”: is this recommended or obligatory?

The well-known position in the madhhab is that it is recommended, not obligatory, (2) and that the imam may pronounce the takbir quietly so that it cannot be heard, just as one praying alone and a follower do not raise their voices; thus, the imam may
