Part of straightening and perfecting the rows is for a person to stand close to the imam, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Let those among you who are mature and discerning stand closest to me.” (1) The closer one is, the more deserving one is of this position. This is why people are encouraged to draw close to the imam in the Friday prayer, because drawing close to the imam in the Friday prayer enables one to be close to him during both the prayer and the sermon. Thus, drawing close to the imam is something sought after, yet some people are negligent about it and do not take care to do so.

Part of straightening the rows is giving preference to the right side of the row over its left; that is, the right side of the row is better than its left. However, this is not absolute as it is with the first row. For if it were absolute, as it is with the first row, the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, would have said: “Complete the right side, then the next right side,” just as he said: “Complete the first row, then the one after it.” (3)
Since it is not prescribed to begin with the right side until it is complete, we must consider the principles of the Shariah: how does this preference for the right apply in relation to the left? We find that it applies when the right and left sides are aligned and equal, or nearly so. Then the right side is preferable. For example, if there are five people on the left and five on the right, and an eleventh person arrives, we say to him: “Go to the right,” because the right is preferable when the two sides are equal, or even nearly equal, such that no noticeable disparity appears between the right and left sides of the row. But when they are far apart, then no doubt the left side that is closer is better than the right side that is farther away.
