woven into it, whether these threads cover the entire garment or only part of it, such as the collar, the edge of the sleeve, or any other place. This is due to the general wording of the Prophet’s statement, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him: “Gold and silk have been made lawful for the females of my ummah and forbidden to its males” (1), and because a man has no need to adorn himself with gold, for

(1) Reported by al-Tayalisi, no. 506; Ahmad, 4/392, 394, 407; al-Nasai, Kitab al-Zinah, chapter: “The Prohibition of Gold for Men,” 8/161, no. 5163; al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Libas, chapter: “Reports Concerning Silk and Gold,” no. 1720; and others, on the authority of Abu Musa al-Ashari. Al-Daraqutni, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Hajar, and others deemed it defective due to a break in its chain of transmission. See al-Ilal by al-Daraqutni, 7/241; Sahih Ibn Hibban, no. 5434; al-Talkhis al-Habir, no. 51. The hadith also has numerous corroborating reports from Umar ibn al-Khattab, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abdullah ibn Amr, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Uqbah ibn Amir, and Zayd ibn Arqam. However, they are weak, and most are defective. Al-Bazzar said: “We know of no sound hadith concerning this that is established according to the hadith transmitters.” Al-Bahr al-Zakhkhar, 1/467. The best of these corroborating reports are those of Uqbah ibn Amir and Ali ibn Abi Talib. As for the hadith of Uqbah ibn Amir, al-Tahawi, 4/251, and al-Bayhaqi, 2/275, narrated it through Yahya ibn Ayyub al-Ghafiqi, from Amr ibn al-Harith and al-Hasan ibn Thawban, from Hisham ibn Abi Ruqayyah, from Uqbah ibn Amir, traced to the Prophet: “Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his abode in Hell.” He then said ... and cited it in exactly the same wording. Regarding Yahya ibn Ayyub, Ahmad said: “He had poor retention.” Al-Nasai said: “He is not strong.” Ibn Hajar said: “Trustworthy, though he sometimes erred.” See Tahdhib al-Kamal, 31/236. He was contradicted by Abdullah ibn Wahb, who was a reliable hadith master. He narrated it from Amr ibn al-Harith with the same chain and text, except that he said at its end—this being the point relevant here—“Whoever wears silk in this world will be deprived of wearing it in the Hereafter.” See Sharh Mushkil al-Athar, 12/309-310. Hisham ibn Abi Ruqayyah was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in al-Thiqat, 5/501, but no one else declared him reliable. As for the hadith of Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ahmad, 1/115; Abu Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, chapter: “Silk for Women,” no. 4057; al-Nasai, Kitab al-Zinah, chapter: “The Prohibition of Gold for Men,” 8/159; and Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Libas, chapter: “Women Wearing Silk and Gold,” no. 3595, narrated it through Abu al-Aflah, from Abdullah ibn Zurayr al-Ghafiqi, from Ali. Abu al-Aflah was declared reliable by al-Ijli. Al-Dhahabi stated in al-Mizan that Ibn al-Qattan considered him unknown; in al-Kashif, however, he described him as trustworthy, while Ibn Hajar described him in al-Taqrib as acceptable. Abdullah ibn Zurayr was declared reliable by al-Ijli and Ibn Sad. Ibn Hajar said: “Reliable, though accused of Shiism.” Ali ibn al-Madini said: “It is a sound hadith; its narrators are known, and no report from Ali comes except through this route.” See al-Ilal by al-Daraqutni, 3/260; al-Tamhid by Ibn Abd al-Barr, 14/248; al-Ahkam al-Wusta by Abd al-Haqq, 4/184; Nasb al-Rayah, 4/223; al-Talkhis al-Habir, no. 51.
