Among the forms of arrogance in clothing is that mentioned by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: letting one’s garment drag out of arrogance—that is, making it trail upon the ground arrogantly. Its punishment—Allah’s protection is sought—is that “Allah will not speak to him on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment.” (1) Thus, he is punished in two ways: with a painful punishment and with Allah’s turning away from him, Exalted is He.
For this reason, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at, nor purify; and they will have a painful punishment,” he repeated it three times. Abu Dharr said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? They have failed and lost!” He said, “The one who lets his garment hang below his ankles, the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who promotes his merchandise with a false oath.” (2)
Thus, if he lets his garment drag out of arrogance, this is his punishment—Allah’s protection is sought. But if he does not let it drag out of arrogance, he does not deserve this punishment; rather, there is another punishment, as stated by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “Whatever part of the lower garment hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.” (3) It is therefore said: You will be punished in the Fire in proportion to how much of your garment hangs below your ankles.
As for the area between the ankles and the middle of the shin, this is within the permissible range. A man may let it reach his ankles, or raise it to the middle of his shin, or raise it slightly higher still.
Image-making …
His statement, “Image-making”: image-making is prohibited, and it is of three types:
The first type is depicting something made by a human being. This is permissible, such as when someone draws a car; upon seeing it, you would say, “This is an exact replica of the original,”
