Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

And the hadith of Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her: “Whoever drinks from a silver vessel is only gulping down the fire of Hell into his stomach.” (1) The prohibition denotes forbiddance, and in Umm Salamah’s hadith he is threatened with the fire of Hell; thus, this is among the major sins.

If it is asked: The hadiths concern the vessels themselves, so how can a plated vessel be forbidden?

The answer is that a hadith narrated by al-Daraqutni states: “Indeed, whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver, or from something containing either of them…” (2)

Moreover, what is prohibited involves harm: if it is pure, its harm is complete; and if it is not pure, it contains harm in proportion to that.

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, Book of Drinks, chapter: “Silver Vessels”; and Muslim, Book of Dress and Adornment, chapter: “The Prohibition of Using Vessels of Gold and Silver,” no. 2065. (2) Reported by al-Daraqutni, 1:40, on the authority of Ibn Umar. He said: “Its chain of transmission is hasan (fair).” I say: Al-Daraqutni’s statement should be understood as referring to its unusualness or objectionability, for the early imams, especially the specialists in hadith defects, sometimes use the term tahsin (declaring a report fair) while intending to indicate objectionability. For example, after reporting a hadith in his Sunan, 4:142, al-Nasai said: “Its chain of transmission is hasan, yet it is objectionable.” By this, al-Nasai did not mean that the text of the hadith was objectionable, but rather that its chain was objectionable, since the text is authentic and was reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim. For further discussion, see al-Irshadat, p. 148. Thus, al-Daraqutni’s statement accords with those of the other hadith masters, who unanimously judged it weak and objectionable. Among them were: - Ibn al-Qattan, who said: “It is not authentic.” Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham, no. 2152. - Al-Nawawi, who said: “Weak.” Khulasat al-Ahkam, no. 72. - Ibn Taymiyyah, who said: “Its chain of transmission is weak.” Majmu al-Fatawa, 21:85. - Al-Dhahabi, who said: “An objectionable hadith.” Al-Mizan, in the entry on Yahya ibn Muhammad al-Jari. - Ibn Hajar, who said: “A defective hadith.” Al-Fath, in the commentary on hadith no. 5638. This is as they said.
