or “a gemstone in a ring,” and the like, then he has acknowledged the first item”—namely, the gemstone; he has not acknowledged the ring. This is because he may have stolen a gemstone and set it in his own ring, and this is common. Moreover, the gemstone is an accessory to the ring, not the reverse. Thus, if he were to say, “a ring in a gemstone,” we may understand “in” to mean “with,” in which case he would be liable for a ring with a gemstone. If he says, “a ring containing a gemstone,” both are binding upon him. And Allah knows best.
May Allah send prayers, peace, and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon all his family and Companions.
By the grace, help, and enabling of Allah Most High, the scholarly lessons delivered by the eminent scholar Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin (d. 1421 AH), explaining the book Zad al-Mustaqniʿ fi Ikhtisar al-Muqniʿ by its author, the virtuous jurist Sharaf al-Din Abu al-Naja al-Hajjawi (d. 960 AH), have come to an end. All praise is due to Allah, by whose blessing righteous deeds are brought to completion.
