Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

some scholars hold that immediate performance is not obligatory on the basis of this hadith. (1)

In sequence …

His statement, “in sequence,” means that he begins with them in their proper order. Thus, if he owes five prayers, he begins with the noon prayer: he prays the noon prayer, then the afternoon prayer, then the sunset prayer, then the night prayer, and then the dawn prayer.

The evidence for this is as follows:

  1. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it …” (2) This encompasses the prayer itself and the manner in which it is performed. It likewise encompasses the prayer’s place among the prayers; thus, it must be performed in its proper sequential position. For example, the noon prayer is to be performed between the dawn and afternoon prayers; in that case, he has indeed prayed it. Likewise, the sunset prayer is to be performed between the afternoon and night prayers.

  2. It is also authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he missed four prayers during the Battle of the Trench and made them up in sequence. (3)

(3) Recorded by Ahmad, 3:25; al-Nasai, Book of the Adhan, chapter on the adhan for a missed prayer, 2:17, no. 660; and al-Daraqutni in al-Ilal, 11:300, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Said, from Abu Said al-Khudri. The hadith was authenticated by Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 996; Ibn Hibban, no. 2890; and Ibn al-Sakan. Ibn Sayyid al-Nas said: “Its chain of transmission is sound and eminent.” It also has a supporting narration from Abdullah ibn Masud, recorded by Ahmad, 1:375; al-Tirmidhi, Book of Prayer, chapter concerning a man who misses prayers and which of them he should begin with, no. 179; and al-Nasai, Book of Prayer Times, chapter on how to make up a missed prayer, 1:297, through the route of Abu Ubaydah from Ibn Masud. Abu Ubaydah did not hear from Ibn Masud, as stated by al-Tirmidhi and others. See al-Fath, commentary on hadith no. 596; al-Talkhis al-Habir, no. 288; and Nayl al-Awtar, Book of Prayer, chapter on observing sequence when making up missed prayers, 2:37.
