As for the rational consideration: the time of the second prayer is also a time for the first prayer when there is an excuse that permits combining them. Thus, since it is a time for the first prayer in the case of such an excuse, catching part of it is like catching part of both prayer-times together. This is the well-known position in the madhhab. (1)
Some scholars have said that only the prayer whose time he catches is binding upon him; as for the prayer before it, it is not binding upon him. (2) This is the stronger view. They cited textual evidence and rational consideration.
As for the textual evidence: it is the saying of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him:
(1) See al-Insaf, 3:179; al-Iqna, 1:129-30.
(2) See al-Mughni, 2:47; Majmu al-Fatawa, 23:334-35.
