of the Jews today is the Torah that was revealed to Moses. For Allah, Most High, says:
“Say, ‘Who sent down the Book which Moses brought as a light and guidance for the people, which you have made into separate sheets, disclosing some of it while concealing much?’” [al-An‘am 6:91]
Allah, Most High, has informed us that the People of the Book “distort words from their proper places” [al-Ma’idah 5:13]. Therefore, we do not trust the books in their possession. Sensory evidence likewise indicates this: these books are contradictory. The Gospels and the Talmuds in the possession of the Jews are all contradictory. Had they been from Allah, would they contradict one another? They would not. Their fundamental contradictions demonstrate that they have been distorted and altered.
Nevertheless, we believe that Allah revealed to Jesus a Book, namely the Gospel, and to Moses a Book, namely the Torah. We must believe in them and affirm: all the reports they contained were true, and all the rulings they contained were just and true. Yet distortion and alteration subsequently befell them. Thus, we do not trust what the Jews and Christians possess of them today.
He said: “If someone knows that it was revealed by Allah and that belief in it is obligatory, then he is to be executed for reviling it, and his repentance is not accepted according to the more apparent of the two scholarly views. As for one who curses the religion of the Jews as they follow it in this age, there is no blame upon him for doing so. The same applies if he disparages the Torah in their possession in a manner that makes clear that he intends to mention its distortion—for example, if it is said: ‘The copies of this Torah have been altered; it is not permissible to act upon what they contain. Whoever today acts upon its altered and abrogated laws is a disbeliever.’ Such speech, and the like, is true, and its speaker bears no blame.”
