an act or statement that is not explicit, we do not declare him a disbeliever, because the basic presumption is that he remains a Muslim; we do not exclude him from Islam except on the basis of clear proof. Thus, that which admits of interpretation does not render one a disbeliever. But if it is an explicit act of mockery—whether in deed, such as when someone imitates the prayer, with its bowing, prostration, standing, and sitting, in a derisive manner—then he has disbelieved.
He said: “Or if he is found to have treated the Quran contemptuously, sought to find contradictions in it, claimed that it is inconsistent, fabricated, or capable of being matched, or stripped it of its sanctity.” What constitutes contempt for the Quran includes, for example, throwing it into the garbage or a lavatory, or stepping on it—we ask Allah for well-being. This is disbelief. Likewise, seeking out its contradictions, claiming that it contains contradictions or inconsistencies, or alleging that it is fabricated—that is, that it is a lie—all of this is disbelief. For the Quran is the speech of Allah, Lord of the worlds. Any fault one imputes to this mighty speech is thereby imputed to the One who spoke it. Thus, every fault, contemptuous treatment, attempt to find contradictions, allegation of corruption, or anything similar that constitutes a disparagement of the Quran is also a disparagement of Allah, Exalted is He.
From this we recognize the عظمة of this magnificent Quran: had it been sent down upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and split asunder from fear of Allah. By Allah, were it not for the abundance of copies of the Quran among us, a person would seek it even for thousands of dinars—as is now found in some Muslim lands. Some people struggle fiercely over a single copy of the Quran, while others take a copy and transcribe it by hand. Indeed, it deserves to be treated in this way, for this Quran is the speech of Allah, Lord of the worlds. There is no speech greater than it, nor any speech more inviolable in requiring that its rulings be acted upon and implemented, and that its reports be affirmed.
