so as not to reveal their disbelief; rather, “they turn away from you with aversion”—that is, they turn aside. “But how will it be when disaster strikes them because of what their own hands have done? Then they come to you, swearing by Allah, ‘We intended nothing but goodwill and reconciliation.’” That is, they claim that they intended to do good and reconcile the Shariah with man-made law. But are they truthful? He, Glorified be He, says: “Allah knows well what is in their hearts; so turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them words that will penetrate their souls. We sent no messenger except to be obeyed by Allah’s permission” [Women: 63–64]—not so that his rulings might be toyed with and abandoned, while judgement is sought from the ṭāghūt.
Know that if people were to refer their disputes to Allah and His Messenger, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, and make Allah and His Messenger arbiters in every matter, their condition would be set right. Yet their condition deteriorates in proportion to their distance from the religion. They then imagine that this corruption is due to their adherence to the religious teachings to which they hold, and so they go ever further in turning away from Allah’s religion and from seeking the judgement of Allah and His Messenger, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. This is the reality: they think that the economic and material deficiencies, and their moral and military backwardness, have befallen them because of the rulings of the Shariah that they follow. In truth, however, this is due to their مخالفة الشريعة (contravention of the Shariah). Had they conformed to the Shariah, it would have been Allah’s just Shariah, overpowering and triumphant, as He, Most High, says: “It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over every other religion” [The Ranks: 9]. “To make it prevail” means to raise it above all else. There is no need to demonstrate this, for history makes it well known: when the Muslim community held firmly to Allah’s religion, fighting only by the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him, and seeking the aid of Allah, Most High, religions and empires fell before it,
