and this extraordinary sensitivity. A person has four eyelids: thus, the right is taken for the right, the upper for the upper, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the lip,” refers to the edge of the mouth; it consists of an upper and a lower lip.

His statement, “the hand,” means that a hand is taken for a hand: the right for the right, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the foot,” means that a foot is taken for a foot: the right for the right, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the finger,” means that a finger is taken for a finger: the thumb for the thumb, the right for the right, and likewise for the rest.

His statement, “the palm,” means that a palm is taken for a palm. Why does he mention the palm here when he has already mentioned the hand? The answer is that the author’s earlier statement, “the hand,” is understood to mean the entire hand, from the shoulder or from the elbow; whereas the palm begins at the base of the fingers. Thus, the right is taken for the right, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the elbow,” means that an elbow is taken for an elbow; that is, the hand is severed at the joint between the forearm and the upper arm.

His statement, “the penis,” means that a penis is taken for a penis.

His statement, “the testicle,” means that a testicle is taken for a testicle: the right for the right, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the buttock,” means that a buttock is taken for a buttock: the right for the right, and the left for the left.

His statement, “the labium,” means that a labium is taken for a labium. It is the flesh surrounding a woman’s genital opening, comparable to the lips of the mouth.

His statement, “each of these for its like.” Its basis is the saying of Allah, Exalted is He: “And We ordained for them therein: a life for a life, an eye for an eye, and a nose for a nose
