Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

this was explicitly stated by Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) (1). He cited as evidence Bilal’s words to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Do not precede me in saying Amin” (2). The authenticity of this hadith is questionable, but it is supported by the apparent meaning of the Prophet’s words: “When you hear the iqamah, proceed to the prayer …” (3), to the end of the hadith.

The author (may Allah have mercy on him) qualified this by saying, “if it is easy,” from which it is understood that if this is difficult—for example, if he gave the adhan from a minaret—then he gives the iqamah wherever it is feasible. Nowadays, it is possible for one who gives the iqamah through a loudspeaker

(1) See al-Mughni, 2:71. (2) Narrated by Abd al-Razzaq, no. 2636; and through him by al-Tabarani, 1, no. 1124, and al-Bayhaqi, 1:56. It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad, 6:12, 15; Abu Dawud, Book of Prayer, chapter: “Saying Amin Behind the Imam,” no. 937; al-Bazzar, no. 1375; al-Tabarani, 1, no. 1125, and 6, no. 6136; al-Tahawi, Sharh Mushkil al-Athar, nos. 5625-5626; al-Hakim, 1:219; and al-Bayhaqi, 1:23, through their chains from Abu Uthman al-Nahdi, who reported that Bilal said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and then related the report. Al-Bayhaqi considered it defective due to irsal (a disconnected transmission). Ibn al-Turkumani responded: “Abu Uthman embraced Islam during the lifetime of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and heard from a great many of his Companions, such as Umar ibn al-Khattab and others. Thus, when he narrates from Bilal using the wording ‘from’ or ‘he said,’ it is understood to be connected, according to the well-known position among them.” 1:23. Abu Hatim al-Razi said: “This is an error. The reliable narrators reported it from Asim, from Abu Uthman, that Bilal said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in a mursal form.” Al-Ilal by Ibn Abi Hatim, no. 314. Ibn Hajar said: “Its narrators are trustworthy, but it has been said that Abu Uthman did not meet Bilal. It has also been narrated from him with the wording, ‘Bilal said,’ which is apparently mursal; al-Daraqutni and others regarded this as stronger than the connected version.” See al-Fath, commentary on hadith no. 780. (3) Narrated by al-Bukhari, Book of the Adhan, chapter: “One Should Not Hasten to the Prayer ...,” no. 636; and Muslim, Book of Mosques, chapter: “The Recommendation to Come to the Prayer with Dignity and Tranquility ...,” no. 602, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah.
