alone. If a man testifies, then this is all the more so, because a man’s testimony carries greater weight than a woman’s. Thus, if the Prophetic Sunnah establishes breastfeeding through the testimony of one woman, then establishing it through the testimony of one man is more readily accepted.
Some scholars said that a distinction should be made between a woman testifying about her own act and testifying about someone else’s act. If she testifies concerning her own act, her testimony is accepted, because she is entrusted in that matter and because this may bring harm upon her. Thus, if she testifies to it against herself, her testimony is accepted; this is what the hadith addresses. But if she testifies concerning someone else’s act, her testimony is not accepted; rather, four women, or one man and two women, are required. They treated it like financial matters.
