she may be protected from any temptation. If these garments are worn beneath unattractive outer clothing, someone might otherwise say: “These clothes are not intrinsically prohibited, as is evident from the fact that a particular garment may be considered adornment at one time, yet ordinary work clothing at another. That is, when people are poor, what counts as fine clothing for them may be the clothing of the middle class among people wealthier than they are. Likewise, the fine clothing of the middle class is not considered beautiful clothing in comparison with the garments of the rich and affluent.” Accordingly, since such a garment is not prohibited to a mourning woman in and of itself, we would say that if she wears something over it that conceals it, it is not prohibited for her. Yet I say: the more cautious view is that she should be forbidden from doing so altogether, for the outer garment may come uncovered and reveal the lower one; or someone may follow her example without realizing this. This, then, is preferable.
If you ask: What is the wisdom behind these restrictions upon a woman during the waiting period following her husband’s death?
We reply: The wisdom is to honour the husband’s right and his waiting period, and to ensure that she does not invite the interest of prospective husbands and keeps away from everything that might prompt them to propose to her, lest anyone should aspire to marry her and become attached to her during this period. This is not required during the waiting period following a revocable divorce, because her husband is alive; and were anyone to encroach upon his right during her waiting period by proposing to her, he would defend her.
Note: Some women have become accustomed to wearing black, not going out into the courtyard of the house, not going up to the roof, not looking at the moon on the night of the full moon, not speaking to any men, not speaking on the telephone, and, when the door is knocked, not speaking to the person at the door—along with other practices for which Allah has sent down no authority. All of this is superstition and has no basis.
