If he says, “Whenever, or if, or if you give me one thousand, then you are divorced,” she is divorced upon giving it to him, even if there is a delay. ………

His statement, “If he says: ‘Whenever, or if, or if you give me one thousand, then you are divorced’”: matā (whenever) is a conditional noun and refers to the future, as do idhā (if/when) and in (if). However, matā relates to time, while idhā indicates a temporal circumstance; in, on the other hand, is a purely conditional particle. All three indicate a condition. Thus, if he says, “Whenever you give me one thousand, then you are divorced,” or, “When you give me one thousand, then you are divorced,” this is general and covers every time from the present until she gives it to him. As for “If you give me,” its indication of temporal circumstance does not arise from the word itself, since in is a particle with no independent meaning. Rather, the indication of generality comes from the conditional verb, which refers to the future and thus includes all future time.

His statement, “If you give me,” is pronounced with the tāʾ bearing kasrah and without a yāʾ. Another usage has been reported—though it is very weak—in which a yāʾ is added for phonetic lengthening, such that one says, “You give me.” This usage corresponds to our colloquial dialect: we say, “You give me,” rather than, “You give me.” The latter is the eloquent Arabic usage, for it distinguishes between the masculine and feminine by giving the tāʾ either kasrah or fatḥah.

His statement, “one thousand”: the author did not state what the thousand is counted in, but it means one thousand dirhams, since that is what is most commonly understood.

His statement, “She is divorced upon giving it to him, even if there is a delay,” means that she is divorced when she gives it to him, even if this occurs after one month, two months, or ten months. Whenever she gives him what he stipulated, she is divorced. An example is a man who has problems with his wife, and she asks him for divorce. He says, “If you give me ten thousand riyals, then you are divorced,” and Allah makes it easy for her
