a child is a provision and favor from Allah, Most High, as Allah says: “So now have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you.” [al-Baqarah 2:187] If he does not mention Allah’s name, Satan may harm his child, and he may share with the man in enjoyment of his wife. Allah, Most High, said to Satan: “Rally against them whatever cavalry and infantry you can; share with them in their wealth and children.” [al-Isra’ 17:64] Some scholars said that sharing in children means that, if a man does not mention Allah’s name before intercourse, Satan may share with him in enjoyment of his wife.
If someone asks: Suppose he approaches his wife while naked—should he recite this supplication? Yes, he should, because the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, stated it without restriction. Moreover, there is nothing wrong with a man approaching his wife while naked, and with her likewise being naked. However, the sunnah is for them to cover themselves with a single sheet, so that their private parts are not exposed and they do not resemble two donkeys. (1)
“It is disliked to speak excessively, to withdraw before she has attained satisfaction, to have intercourse in anyone’s presence, and to speak about it. It is prohibited for him to house his two wives in one dwelling without their consent, though he may prevent her from leaving his home.”
His statement, “It is disliked to speak excessively,” means during sexual intercourse. When a man is having intercourse with his wife, he should not speak excessively. He may speak, but he should not speak much. In al-Rawd there is a hadith, though it is weak: “Do not speak excessively when having intercourse with women, for it causes muteness and stammering.” (2) Muteness means being unable to speak, while stammering is the repetition of the letter f when pronouncing it. There is no doubt that excessive speech in this state is unbecoming, since the man has uncovered his private parts, as has the woman. But brief speech that intensifies desire is unobjectionable; indeed, it may be desirable.
