her family, at the time of the marriage contract, to disclose it to him, because it is a defect. The same applies to the man.
However, in our view, vitiligo is of two types. One type is truly an illness: it begins in a person as a very small spot, then spreads across the skin like scabies—we ask Allah for well-being. The other type is not a defect. For example, the skin may have been affected by something, such as a burn, a wound, or the like; or the cause may be unknown, but it is not an illness: it neither increases nor changes, and scarcely anyone is free from something of this kind. What they mean, however, is the vitiligo that constitutes a defect, spreads over the skin, and is feared to spread further. Remarkably—glory be to Allah—this illness is not contagious. Had it been contagious, physicians would have been able to treat it, because a contagious illness is transmitted through its germs, and once the germs are known, they can be eliminated. Thus, one may at times find a man with this condition serving people: he cooks their lunch and dinner and handles their utensils, while they remain unaffected by the illness.
The curing of the blind and the leper was among the signs given to Jesus, peace be upon him. Allah, Exalted is He, says: “And you healed the blind and the leper by My permission.” [al-Ma'idah 5:110] It was therefore among his miraculous signs, for curing the blind and the leper, bringing the dead to life, and bringing them forth from their graves are beyond human capability—whether through medical treatment or anything else. In any case, vitiligo is a repulsive disease and is a defect in either the husband or the wife.
His statement, “and leprosy”: this refers to ulcers that afflict the body, from which it does not remain free; they continue to spread until the person dies. Common people call it “the devouring disease,” because it consumes the skin. It is undoubtedly a defect, and it is also contagious. It is reported in the sunnah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded people to flee from
