However, if the insanity was due to a neurological cause, and it was treated completely, and the physicians determined with certainty that it would not return—for example, they found a nerve that caused the neurological convulsions and severed it, or something similar—the point being that they were certain it would not return, then this is not a defect. For there is no one who does not fall ill and then recover. But if it is due to jinn, or due to a neurological cause but has not been cured, then it is a defect.

His statement, “and vitiligo”: this is a whitening of the skin. It is among the illnesses that may be hereditary, or may arise for one reason or another. One of its most common causes is overeating: when a person fills his stomach and mixes different foods in it. For this reason, Shaykh al-Islam, may Allah have mercy on him, said: If a person fears that eating will lead him to overeat, then eating is forbidden for him, even if it is only bread and meat.

Another cause is fright and loneliness, for they can bring this about. In earlier times, people would travel on dark and frightening nights, and sometimes this affliction would strike some of them. It may also occur by Allah’s decree, with no known cause. Thus, vitiligo is considered a defect even if it is no more than the size of a pinhead, whether it is found in the husband or the wife. Hence, in the hadith concerning the three men, one of whom had vitiligo, he said: “And remove from me that by which people have regarded me with disgust.” (1)

The jurists state that this applies even if it is slight, because there is no assurance that it will not increase and spread. Accordingly, if the wife has vitiligo in her armpit the size of a pinhead, it is obligatory upon
