Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

His statement, “the woman involved in mutual imprecation is forbidden to the one who engaged in mutual imprecation with her”: as for the children of the man who engages in mutual imprecation, we return to the basic principles governing prohibition through marriage ties, as will come, if Allah Most High wills.

The fourth category of those permanently forbidden in marriage is his statement:

“Through breastfeeding, whatever is forbidden through blood relationship is likewise forbidden, except one’s sister’s mother and one’s son’s sister, …”

“Through breastfeeding, whatever is forbidden through blood relationship is likewise forbidden.” This is the wording of the hadith (1).

His words, “through breastfeeding,” mean: on account of breastfeeding; and “whatever is forbidden through blood relationship” means: on account of blood relationship.

Breastfeeding is well known: it is giving milk to a child. Blood relationship means kinship. Allah the Exalted says:

“When the Trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship between them on that Day, nor will they ask about one another.” [Surah al-Mu’minun]

Accordingly, list those forbidden through breastfeeding just as you list those forbidden through blood relationship, exactly alike. Thus, one’s foster mother, foster daughter, foster sister, foster niece through one’s sister, foster niece through one’s brother, foster paternal aunt, and foster maternal aunt are forbidden in marriage.

The Prophet ﷺ was granted concise, comprehensive, and decisive speech. Thus he said, “Through breastfeeding, whatever is forbidden through blood relationship is likewise forbidden.” Apply the one to the other. However, breastfeeding must fulfil certain conditions:

First: there must be five or more separate nursings. This is the preponderant view, based on the hadith of Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, which was narrated by
