there is a beautiful woman, and he knows that he would not be content to marry someone less beautiful, even if she were more religious. Should we tell him: “Force yourself to marry this one rather than that one, even though you do not feel at ease with her”? Or should we say: “Marry the one with whom you feel at ease, so long as she is neither sexually immoral nor sinful”?
The apparent view is the latter—unless she is not religious, meaning that she is sinful. In that case, he should not marry her. As for sexual immorality and adultery, she is not lawful for him to marry. Some people may say, “I will marry an irreligious woman; perhaps Allah will guide her through me.” We say to him: We are not held responsible for the future, for we do not know what it holds. You may marry her hoping that Allah will guide her through you, but she may instead turn you into what she is, and you will be wretched because of her.
The reverse is likewise true. Sometimes a sinful man proposes to a family, but they say, “Perhaps Allah will guide him.” Worse still is when he is known not to pray, yet they say, “Perhaps Allah will guide him.” We say: We are not accountable for the future; rather, we are accountable for what is before us—for the present. The man whom you thought would become upright may instead corrupt and misguide your daughter, because a man has authority over a woman. How many a committed woman has married someone whom she thought was religious, only to discover that he was not religious, and then suffers terribly with him. Women constantly bring such cases to us, until one of them wishes to flee from that man in order to preserve her religion, even if it costs her all her wealth. Therefore, one must exercise caution in such matters, whether concerning a man marrying a woman or a woman marrying a man.
“A non-relative, …”
His statement, “a non-relative,” means that there is no blood relationship between him and her. She should not be from his paternal cousins; rather, she should be from an unrelated family. They gave two reasons for this:
