the martyrs, and the righteous. There are three ways of establishing its purity:
-
The basic principle concerning things is that they are pure. Whoever claims that something is impure must provide evidence.
-
Aisha would scrape off the dried semen of the Prophet ﷺ (1), and wash what was still moist (2). Had it been impure, scraping it off would not have sufficed. The Prophet ﷺ said regarding menstrual blood that gets on a garment: “Scratch it off, then rub it with water, then sprinkle water over it, and then pray in it” (3). Thus, it must be washed after being scraped off. If semen were impure, it would likewise have to be washed, and merely scraping off what had dried would not suffice, just as with menstrual blood.

This fluid is the origin of Allah’s sincere servants: the Prophets, the utterly truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. Allah’s wisdom precludes the origin of these righteous people from being impure.
A man once passed by two scholars engaged in a debate and asked, “What is the matter between you two?” One replied, “I am trying to establish that his origin is pure, while he is trying to establish that his origin is impure”—for one of them held semen to be pure, while the other held it to be impure.
Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, devoted a discussion in his book Bada'i al-Fawa'id (4)
