If the physiognomists attribute him to two men, saying, “He is the son of Zayd and Amr,” is he to be affiliated with both of them? The jurists said: He is affiliated with both, and it is possible for conception to result from two men. However, contemporary medical specialists say that it is not possible for a child to be from two persons. Thus, the matter should be investigated and considered: is what the jurists said in accordance with reality or not? For the jurists may have based this on resemblance: if he resembles both this man and that man, he is affiliated with both. Yet a person may sometimes resemble a man who is not even from his tribe, let alone his father or brother.
