From this, we know that what car dealers do nowadays is sheer error: you find that one person buys a car and then sells it; the second sells it, and the third sells it; yet the car is registered in the name of the fourth as though he had bought it from the first. This is wrong and unlawful, because it is a lie and gives rise to liabilities. Thus, if it later appears that the car was stolen, the fourth buyer will pursue the first according to the documentation, and it may be difficult to pursue the first. In such a case, however, it must be stated: So-and-so sold the car to Zayd; Zayd sold it to Amr; Amr sold it to Khalid; and Khalid sold it to Bakr. The chain of transactions must be recorded, so that each person may seek recourse from the one who sold it to him, and error may thus be avoided.
