in Allah from such a condition. However, when an act becomes an act of devotion through one’s intention, yet another person benefits from it, there is nothing wrong with receiving payment for it because of that benefit to the other person—such as teaching.

For example, if someone says to another, “I want you to teach me the chapter on the conditions of prayer,” and he replies, “I do not mind, but on condition that you pay me a wage,” we say: There is nothing wrong with this, because the payment here is not for worship through the act itself, but for the benefit another person receives from it.

If someone is asked to teach another person Surah al-Baqarah and says, “I will not teach him except for payment,” this is permissible, because it is for teaching, not merely for recitation. There is a difference between teaching, whose benefit extends to others, and recitation.

Likewise, if someone says to a sick person, “I will not perform ruqyah for you except for payment,” intending to perform ruqyah for him with the Quran, this is permissible. This is why, when the Prophet ﷺ sent out a detachment and they stopped among some people as guests, those people refused to offer them hospitality. Then Allah sent a scorpion upon their chief, and it stung him—its sting was severe, Allah knows best. They sought someone to treat him and said, “Perhaps among these people there is someone who can perform ruqyah,” meaning the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, whom they had avoided after refusing them hospitality.

So they came to the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and said, “Our chief has been stung. Is there anyone among you who can perform ruqyah?” They said, “Yes, one of us can perform ruqyah for him, but we will not do so except in return for a flock of sheep, because you did not honor us or offer us hospitality.” They said, “That is acceptable.” So the reciter recited over him, and by Allah’s permission he rose as though he had been released from a tether. He recited nothing over him but Surah al-Fatihah—the very surah that some people today recite a thousand times without the sick person benefiting. Thus, he recited Surah al-Fatihah over him, and he was cured by Allah’s permission. They then gave them the flock of sheep, but it caused uncertainty
