has a husband who is employed early in the day and is not with her. If she is hired to sew a garment during his absence from the home, without falling short in her household duties, then this is permissible, because it causes the husband no harm. Likewise, if the husband is away and she is hired to sew or wash a garment, or the like, there is no objection, since in this case none of the husband’s rights is neglected.
But if she hires herself out while her husband is absent, the apparent meaning of the author’s words is that this is not permissible, based on his statement, “A woman may not hire herself out,” because the husband may not approve of her leaving his home even while he is away. Therefore, she may not hire herself out at all except with her husband’s permission.
