The second view on this issue is that they must be of the same kind. They reasoned that if they are of two different kinds, the value of one kind may rise until it absorbs the entire profit. However, the correct view is that adopted by the author, on condition that the price of dinars neither rises nor falls, such that it is fixed by the state. But if it is liable to increase or decrease, then this is not permissible.
At the present time, dinars—gold—do not have a fixed value. Accordingly, it is not valid for one partner’s contribution to be in dinars and the other’s in dirhams, except according to the view mentioned previously: that capital may consist of trade goods, provided that it is assessed according to its value. In that case, dinars and dirhams may be contributed, but the dinars must be valued in dirhams.
