- Ablution is one of the two forms of purification; were it not for major ritual impurity, it would remove ritual impurity completely. Thus, in this case, it serves to lessen major ritual impurity.
Whoever washes a deceased person, …
His statement, “Whoever washes a deceased person”: he now begins to explain the recommended baths. Among them is bathing after washing a deceased person. Thus, if someone washes a deceased person, it is recommended for him to perform ghusl. The evidence for this is as follows:
- The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever washes a deceased person should perform ghusl, and whoever carries him should perform ablution.” (1)
They said: This hadith contains a command, and the basic principle regarding a command is that it indicates obligation. However, because it has some weakness, it is not strong enough to establish an obligation. This is based on a principle: that when a prohibition occurs in a weak hadith, it does not

Imam Ahmad, Abu Hatim al-Razi, al-Bukhari, and others held that attributing it directly to the Prophet was an error; the correct view is that it is mawquf (stopped at the Companion) on Abu Hurayrah. See al-Ilal by Ibn Abi Hatim, no. 1035; al-Muharrar, no. 87.
Ibn al-Qayyim cited eleven chains for this hadith, then said: “These chains indicate that the hadith is preserved.” Ibn al-Qattan and Ibn Hazm graded it authentic. Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Its chain meets Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: “Overall, given its numerous chains, its lowest possible grade is hasan (sound).” See al-Khulasah, no. 3339; Sharh al-Umdah, 1:362; Tahdhib al-Sunan, 4:306; al-Talkhis al-Habir, no. 182.
