Third: Consensus

The Muslims are unanimously agreed that it is forbidden for a person in a state of ritual impurity to pray without purification.

Prayer is that whose opening is marked by the takbīr and whose conclusion is marked by the salām, as the Messenger ﷺ explained, whether it includes bowing and prostration or not.

Thus, the five obligatory prayers are prayers, as are the Friday prayer, the two Eid prayers, the prayer for rain, the eclipse prayer, and the funeral prayer. The funeral prayer is a prayer because it begins with the takbīr and ends with the salām; it therefore falls under the legal definition and is included within the term “prayer.”

Some scholars said that prayer is that which includes bowing and prostration. (1)

Others said that prayer is that which consists of two units or more, except for the witr prayer, which is a prayer even if it consists of only one unit. (593)

The first view is the sounder one.

On the basis of this definition, we consider whether the two prostrations of Quranic recitation and of gratitude constitute prayer. …

The well-known position in the madhhab is that they are prayers: they begin with the takbīr and end with the salām. Accordingly, they hold that one should say the takbīr when prostrating and when rising, and then give the salām. Based on this, it is forbidden for a person in a state of ritual impurity to perform the prostration of recitation or gratitude while not purified. Thus, the disagreement over whether purification is a condition for them is based
