it is not permissible, according to the stronger view, for a person to name his son Abd al-Muttalib. If someone cites the words of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, as evidence, we reply that this falls under the category of reporting a fact. Thus, if your father were named Abd al-Rasul, you could say, “I am so-and-so, the son of Abd al-Rasul,” and this would not constitute approval, but merely reporting a fact. However, if Abd al-Rasul is still alive, he must change his name to another one. The scope of reporting a fact is broader than that of naming, and it is naming that is prohibited.

Issue: There are names that have begun to emerge, especially among women, which are unusual. Someone mentioned a man who named his child Naktal. When he was asked why, he said, “Because this is the brother of Joseph: ‘So send our brother with us, that we may receive a full measure.’” This is ignorance. They wish to seek blessing through names found in the Noble Quran, so they seize upon them without thought or proper consideration. What should be done is to choose names that are customary in one’s society, familiar to people, and free of any religious prohibition.

As for foreign names, if they are names distinctive to the disbelievers, then they are unlawful, because this is among the most emphatic forms of imitation of them and among the greatest means of elevating them. When Muslims choose the names of those disbelievers, such as George and the like, they thereby venerate them.

As for the names of angels:

Some scholars hold that adopting their names is unlawful.

Others hold that it is disliked.

Others hold that it is permissible.
