the seventh, or on the fourteenth or twenty-first day.
His statement, “For a boy, two sheep; and for a girl, one sheep”: that is, for a male child, two sheep. This distinction between male and female is established in the Sunnah from the Prophet (1).
His statement, “For a boy, two sheep”: the two sheep should be similar in age, size, appearance, and fatness. The more alike they are, the better. If, however, a person can only find one sheep, it will suffice and the objective will be achieved thereby. But if Allah has made him well-off, then two are better.
His statement, “And for a girl, one sheep”: the term “girl” means a female child. This is one of the matters in which a man counts as double a woman.
Are there other such matters?
The answer is: yes: inheritance shares, blood money, testimony, and prayer. This is because the maximum duration of menstruation, according to the well-known view held by most scholars, is fifteen days. Thus, if a woman menstruates for the maximum duration, she has only half a month of prayer in each month, whereas a man exceeds her by half a month. Likewise, when a person gives gifts to his children, he gives the male the share of two females. It is also reported in the hadith that freeing one male slave is equivalent to freeing two female slaves (2).
