Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin
  1. The hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him): A man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “Should we perform ablution after eating camel meat?” He replied, “Yes; perform ablution after eating camel meat.” He then asked, “Should we perform ablution after eating sheep meat?” He replied, “If you wish, perform ablution; and if you wish, do not perform ablution.” (1)

The point of evidence is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made ablution optional with regard to sheep meat. This shows that, in the case of camel meat, there is no option or choice: ablution after eating it is obligatory.

  1. The hadith of al-Bara’, which states: “Perform ablution after eating camel meat.” (2) The basic principle regarding a command is that it denotes obligation. Imam Ahmad and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh said: “There are two authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning this: the hadith of al-Bara’ and the hadith of Jabir ibn Samurah.” (3)

The second view is that it does not invalidate ablution (4). They cited the following evidence for this: ….

(1) Narrated by Muslim, Book of Menstruation, chapter: Wudu from camel meat, no. 360. (2) Narrated by Abu Dawud, Book of Purification, chapter: Wudu from camel meat, no. 184; al-Tirmidhi, Chapters on Purification, chapter: Wudu from camel meat, no. 81; Ibn Majah, Book of Purification, chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Wudu from Camel Meat, no. 494; and Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 32, on the authority of al-Bara ibn Azib. Ibn Khuzaymah said: “I know of no disagreement among the hadith scholars that this report is sound in transmission, due to the integrity of its transmitters.” It was also authenticated by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, al-Nawawi, Ibn Taymiyyah, and others.
