Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

to them; rather, he said: “Visit the graves, for they remind one of the Hereafter.” (1) The best graves for which one may undertake a journey are the grave of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the graves of his two Companions.

Others held that undertaking a journey to visit graves is disliked.

Others held that it is prohibited. This is the view supported by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, and he substantiated it with proofs which, when a person examines them, make it clear to him that his view is correct.

The Manner of Performing ‘Umrah: One enters ihram for it at the miqat, or, in the case of a resident of Makkah and the like, from the nearest point outside the sacred precinct.

His statement: “The manner of performing ‘Umrah is to enter ihram for it at the miqat, or, in the case of a resident of Makkah and the like, from the nearest point outside the sacred precinct.” Thus, it consists of four things: entering ihram, circumambulation, the sa‘i between Safa and Marwah, and shaving the head or shortening the hair.

His statement: “One enters ihram for it at the miqat” means that if he passes by it, he enters ihram there; if he does not pass by it, then he does so from a point parallel to it; and if he is within the miqat boundary, then he enters ihram from where he is, according to what has preceded regarding the miqats.

His statement: “Or from the nearest point outside the sacred precinct, in the case of a resident of Makkah and the like”: the nearest point outside the sacred precinct in relation to the Ka‘bah is al-Tan‘im. However, in relation to one intending to perform ‘Umrah, it may be al-Tan‘im or somewhere else. For example, for one who is at Muzdalifah, the nearest point outside the sacred precinct is ‘Arafah; and for one on the western side of Makkah, it is al-Hudaybiyyah. He is not required to go specifically to al-Tan‘im, which the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, designated for ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, or to al-Ji‘ranah, from which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered ihram
