at the House. The Prophet ﷺ performed the Farewell Tawaf only after all the rites had been completed.
His words, “If he remains,” apparently mean that if he remains after performing the Farewell Tawaf, he must repeat it, whether his stay is long or short. They have, however, made an exception where he remains in order to wait for his travelling companions: in that case, he is not required to repeat the tawaf, even if a long time passes, because obligating them to repeat it would lead to an endless sequence. Likewise, if the call to prayer is given as soon as he finishes tawaf, there is no harm in his praying, for it is authentically reported that, after the Prophet ﷺ performed the Farewell Tawaf, he prayed Fajr and then departed for Medina. Similarly, if, after performing tawaf, he discovers that his car has broken down and remains in Mecca in order to have it repaired, he is not required to repeat this tawaf, because he remained only for a reason, and once it is removed, he continues his journey.
His words, “or engages in trade after it, he must repeat it,” mean that if he buys something for trade or sells something for trade, he must repeat it. From this, it is understood that there is no harm if he buys something he needs, sells something on his way, or buys gifts for his family, provided it is not for trade—though we encourage him to make his purchases before performing tawaf.
Question: What necessitates repeating the Farewell Tawaf if a person delays after it?
