Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

In al-Rawḍ, he says: “He says: ‘In the name of Allah. O Allah, make it for us beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, refreshment, satiety, and a cure from every illness. Wash my heart with it and fill it with fear of You.’” (1) He also says: “He sprinkles it upon his garment, faces the qiblah, and takes three breaths.” (2) This too requires evidence. However, the sunnah does establish taking three breaths while drinking. (3)

Then he returns and spends three nights in Mina. He throws seven pebbles at the first pillar, which is adjacent to Masjid al-Khayf, keeping it to his left; then he moves forward a little and supplicates at length. Then he does the same at the middle pillar, …

His statement, “Then he returns and spends three nights in Mina,” means that he returns from Mecca after performing tawaf and sa‘i, and spends three nights there if he delays his departure. If he departs early, then he spends two nights there: the nights of the eleventh and twelfth, and the thirteenth if he delays; but if he departs early, then the eleventh and twelfth.

His statement, “He then throws seven pebbles at the first pillar, which is adjacent to Masjid al-Khayf, keeping it to his left.”

(1) This is based on what Ikrimah narrated: Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, would say when drinking Zamzam: “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every disease.” Recorded by al-Daraqutni (2/288) and al-Hakim (1/473), who said: “Its chain is sound if it is free from al-Jarudi, though the two did not record it.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him. Al-Hakim’s narration was discussed earlier in connection with the hadith, “Zamzam water is for that for which it is drunk.” As for al-Daraqutni’s narration, its chain was graded weak in al-Irwa (4/333). (2) This was an action of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his father. It has already been mentioned in the hadith: “The distinguishing sign between us and the hypocrites is drinking one’s fill of Zamzam.” It contains no mention of placing the rope on the garment. (3) Recorded by al-Bukhari, al-Ashriba, chapter on drinking in two or three breaths (5631), and Muslim, al-Ashriba, chapter on the dislike of breathing into the vessel and the recommendation to breathe three times outside it (2028), on the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him.
