Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

and wipes it; it does not mean that he kisses his hand without wiping or touching it. If touching it is difficult, he gestures toward it (1); and when he gestures toward it, he does not kiss his hand.

All of these forms have been reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and they are arranged according to what is easiest. The highest of them is to touch it with the hand and kiss the Stone; then to touch it with the hand and kiss the hand; then to touch it with a stick or the like and kiss it, provided this causes no harm. As far as we know, the sunnah concerning this latter practice was reported only for one who is riding. Then comes gesturing toward it. Thus, there are four levels, to be performed in that order, without causing harm or hardship.

HE SAYS WHAT HAS BEEN REPORTED AND KEEPS THE HOUSE TO HIS LEFT

His statement, “and he says what has been reported,” means what has been reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him (2), and his Companions. This includes, at the beginning of the circumambulation: “In the name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest (3). O Allah, out of faith in You, affirmation of Your Book, fulfilment of Your covenant, and following the sunnah of Your Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him” (4). Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, used to say this.

(1) This is based on the hadith of Ibn Abbas: “The Messenger of Allah circumambulated the House on a camel; whenever he came to the Corner, he gestured toward it with something in his hand and said Allahu akbar.” Narrated by al-Bukhari in the Book of Hajj, chapter: “Saying Allahu akbar at the Corner” (1613). (2) What is reported from the Prophet is to say Allahu akbar, as in the aforementioned hadith of Ibn Abbas. (3) Abd al-Razzaq (8894) and al-Bayhaqi (5/79) narrated that Ibn Umar, when touching the Corner, would say: “Bismillah; Allahu akbar.” Al-Hafiz stated in al-Talkhis (2/247): “Its chain of transmission is sound.” (4) Narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (5486, 5843). Al-Haythami said: “Its transmitters are those of the Sahih collections.” It was also narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/105), al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (492), and al-Bayhaqi (5/79), on the authority of Ali; and by Abd al-Razzaq (8898), on the authority of Ibn Abbas.
