because the person beginning will start from the right-hand line, which lies beyond the Stone, while the person finishing will end at the left-hand line, thereby completing the circumambulation before reaching the Stone. The people remained upon this arrangement for some time. Then the two lines were changed, and this line was placed at the center of the Stone. It became a convenient and beneficial marker for those performing circumambulation, especially ordinary people.
As for the student of knowledge, he can avoid the difficulty and exercise caution by proceeding to the Yemeni Corner, thereby performing his circumambulation with certainty. Nevertheless, this line has been disputed. Some people say that it must be removed, because some ordinary people, upon finding the line, stop there; and if the line is unoccupied, some of them pray upon it, thinking that it is something prescribed by the Sacred Law. But that is not the case. They therefore say that it should be removed for this reason.
We say: in truth, this is—as they say—a negative matter, but the positive benefit is more important: namely, that people are properly regulated in beginning and ending their circumambulation. As for stopping there, we have observed—both amid crowds and in open space—that it does not occur much. Moreover, such stopping is counterbalanced by the stopping that would occur if there were no line, because everyone who thinks that he has come parallel to the Stone will stop, resulting in numerous stopping points and even greater constriction and crowding. One person stops, thinking that he has come parallel to the Stone; then another stops, thinking the same; then a third stops after him, thinking the same. This would lead to even greater crowding.
As for prayer, if there is crowding, no one is able to pray; and if there is no crowding, those who pray are few and can be advised. In short, in our view its benefit outweighs its harm. We ask Allah to preserve it; otherwise, there is strong opposition calling for its removal. But we hope that Allah, Exalted is He, will allow it to remain so that people may benefit from it.
