Question: Is it permissible for a person in consecration to drink coffee containing saffron?
Answer: If its fragrance remains, the person in consecration should not drink it. But if nothing remains except its color, there is no harm in it, because it contains no perfume.
His statement, “or if he perfumes himself with incense made from aloeswood or the like, he must offer expiation,” means that if he uses aloeswood or something similar—something customarily burned for perfuming oneself—then that is prohibited for him, and he must offer expiation. The expiation has already been explained.
“If he kills an edible game animal that is originally land-dwelling, even if it is born from it and from something else, or if it dies while in his possession, then he is liable for its compensation, …”
His statement, “If he kills an edible game animal”: this is the sixth of the prohibitions of consecration.
The author, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned the characteristics of the game whose hunting is prohibited during consecration. He said, “edible,” and this is the first characteristic. If it is not edible, then killing it is not among the prohibitions of consecration. But should it be killed or not?
The answer is that this falls into three categories:
The first: that which one is commanded to kill.
The second: that which one is forbidden to kill.
The third: that concerning which no ruling has been stated.
As for that which one is commanded to kill, it may be killed whether one is outside the Sacred Precinct or within it, and whether one is in consecration or not. An example is the five creatures explicitly mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ in his saying: “Five creatures are harmful and may be killed both outside the Sacred Precinct and within it: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse, and the vicious dog.”
