Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

He was asked about fasting on Monday, and he said: “That is the day on which I was born, and on which I was sent forth—or revelation came to me.” (1) Thus, the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, made clear that fasting on Monday is recommended. Accordingly, it is sunnah to fast two days of every week: Monday and Thursday.

As for fasting on Tuesday and Wednesday, it is not a sunnah specifically assigned to those days. Otherwise, it falls under the general sunnah of fasting, for a person is encouraged to fast frequently. Yet we do not say that it is sunnah to fast on Tuesday, nor that it is sunnah to fast on Wednesday; nor is doing so disliked.

As for Friday, fasting on that day is not recommended, and singling it out for fasting is disliked. The evidence for this is:

  1. The saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: “Do not fast on Friday unless you fast a day before it or a day after it.” (2)

  2. His saying, peace and blessings be upon him, to one of the Mothers of the Believers, who had been fasting on a Friday: “Did you fast yesterday?” She said, “No.” He said, “Will you fast tomorrow?” She said, “No.” He said, “Then break your fast.” (3) This shows that Friday should not be singled out for fasting; indeed, this has explicitly been prohibited.
