Al-Sharḥ al-MumtiʿIbn al-'Uthaymin

According to the established position of the school, the discharge of madhy invalidates the fast just as semen does. That is, if a person masturbates and emits madhy, or engages in intimate contact and emits madhy, his fast is invalidated. Those who maintain that the fast is not invalidated by the emission of semen hold, all the more so, that it is not invalidated by madhy. As for those who hold that the fast is invalidated by semen, they differ regarding madhy, holding two views.

The established position is that it invalidates the fast, but there is no sound evidence for this. The correct view is the second: that it does not invalidate the fast. Madhy is lesser than semen with respect to desire, the weakening of the body, and the rulings of the Sacred Law, in many—indeed, most or all—of which it differs from semen. It therefore cannot be equated with it.

This was the view chosen by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him. The proof for it is the absence of proof—that is, the absence of any evidence that it invalidates the fast—for fasting is an act of worship which a person undertakes in a legislated manner, and it is not possible for us to declare this act of worship invalid except on the basis of evidence.

His statement, “or he repeatedly looks and ejaculates,” means that his fast is invalidated. Repeated looking is constituted by looking twice. If he looks once and ejaculates, his fast is not invalidated, due to the Prophet’s saying, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him: “The first look is for you, but the second is not for you” (1). This is because a person cannot control avoiding such a thing, for some people are
