difference between them with respect to the foot’s need for them, and the effective cause in both is the same. This therefore falls under semantic generality, or under verbal generality, as in the hadith: “that they should wipe over head coverings and foot-warmers” (1).
Foot-warmers include everything that keeps the foot warm.
As for the mūq, it is a short leather sock over which one may wipe. It has been authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ wiped over mūqayn (2).
“And over a thick sock . . .”
His statement, “and over a thick sock,” indicates that the author stipulates that it be thick, because, according to the school, it must cover the area required to be washed, whereas a thin sock does not provide such coverage.
(1) Its source documentation has been given previously on p. 222.
(2) Reported by Abu Dawud, Kitab al-Taharah (Book of Purification), chapter: wiping over the khuffs (leather socks), no. 153; al-Tabarani, 1, nos. 1100-1101; and al-Hakim, 1:170, who graded it authentic, through Shubah, from Abu Bakr ibn Hafs, from Abu Abd Allah, the freedman of Banu Taym ibn Murrah, from Abu Abd al-Rahman, from Bilal, as a marfu report (attributed to the Prophet). This chain is weak.
- Abu Abd Allah and Abu Abd al-Rahman are both unknown narrators.
- Shubah was contradicted in its chain of transmission. Ibn Jurayj narrated it differently: from Abu Bakr ibn Hafs, from Abu Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Abd Allah, with the same report, as recorded by Abd al-Razzaq, no. 734.

Ahmad, 6:15; al-Tabarani, 1, no. 1112; and Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 189, also narrated it through Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Bilal, as a marfu report. This chain appears sound, but it is defective, since a number of narrators transmitted it from Ayyub without mentioning Abu Idris al-Khawlani, whereas Hammad differed from them by mentioning him. It has also been transmitted in other differing forms.
