“Whenever a people withhold the zakah due on their wealth, they are deprived of rain from the sky” (1).
Fourteenth: charity extinguishes the Lord’s wrath, as is authentically reported from the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him (2).
Fifteenth: it wards off an evil death (3).
Sixteenth: it contends with the calamity descending from heaven, preventing it from reaching the earth (4).
Seventeenth: it expiates sins. The Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
(1) Narrated by Ibn Majah in Kitab al-Fitan, chapter: Punishments (4019), on the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar; by al-Hakim (2/126) and al-Bayhaqi (3/346), on the authority of Buraydah; al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. It was also narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (4577, 6788), on the authority of Buraydah. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (2/63): “Its narrators are trustworthy.”
(2) Narrated by al-Tirmidhi in Kitab al-Zakah, chapter: The virtue of charity (664), and by Ibn Hibban (3309, Ihsan edition), on the authority of Anas ibn Malik. Al-Tirmidhi said: “Hasan gharib through this chain,” and Ibn Hibban graded it authentic. It was also narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (7761), on the authority of Abdullah ibn Jafar.
(3) Narrated by al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban on the authority of Anas, as previously mentioned under the preceding hadith. It was also narrated by Ahmad (3/502), Abd al-Razzaq (20118), and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir (4451), on the authority of Rafi ibn Makayn. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (2/144): “It contains an unnamed man.” Al-Tabarani also narrated it in al-Kabir (17/22), on the authority of Amr ibn Awf. Perhaps these chains lend strength to the hadith; and Allah knows best.
(4) Narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat (5643), on the authority of Ali, as a statement attributed to the Prophet: “Give charity early, for calamity does not pass beyond it.” Al-Haythami graded it weak in al-Majma (3/113). Al-Bayhaqi also narrated it (4/189) on the authority of Anas as a statement of the Companion. Al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (2/143): “This is perhaps more likely.”
